If you're looking for information on native plants, the place to start is usually your local native plant society. Here's a list of native plant societies in the United States and Canada that's accurate as of today, May 24, 2009.
First, here are some cross-border organizations:
- For all of North America but especially Canada (it was originally the Canadian Wildflower Society), see the North American Native Plant Society.
- For New England states, especially Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont, see the website of the New England Wildflower Society.
- For Midwestern states and a few others, see the Wild Ones.
- For the New York City metropolitan area, see NY-NJ-CT Botany Online.
- For Western New York state and nearby areas of Ontario, see the Niagara Frontier Botanical Society.
- For the Great Plains Biogeographic Region, which runs from central Canada to Texas, see the Great Plains Native Plant Society.
- For prairies of the upper Midwest, see the Prairie Enthusiasts.
If you have trouble getting information from any of the other sources listed here, try the organizations directory maintained by the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.
